School Counselor

Position Overview: 

Coventry University Kazakhstan is seeking a compassionate and student-centered School Counselor to support the academic, emotional, and social well-being of our diverse student body. The School Counselor will provide one-on-one and group counselling sessions, develop mental health and wellness initiatives, and work collaboratively with academic and administrative staff to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.

This role is integral to student success, personal growth, and the promotion of a healthy campus culture.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Counselling and Support

• Provide confidential individual counselling to students experiencing personal, academic, emotional, or social challenges.

• Offer short-term interventions and refer students to external mental health professionals when appropriate.

• Create and manage group counselling sessions or peer support groups on topics such as stress management, anxiety, and adjustment to university life.

Mental Health and Wellness Programming

• Design and implement workshops, campaigns, and events related to mental health awareness, resilience, and student well-being.

• Collaborate with the Student Life and Academic Support teams to promote positive coping strategies, self-care, and emotional intelligence.

Crisis Intervention

• Provide immediate support and risk assessment in crisis situations (e.g., mental health emergencies, suicidal ideation, trauma).

• Develop safety plans and work with relevant departments to ensure the student’s well-being and continuity of care.

Collaboration and Advocacy

• Act as a resource for faculty and staff on student mental health concerns.

• Advocate for inclusive, trauma-informed, and student-centered practices across the institution.

• Participate in case management meetings and student welfare committees.

Student Development and Academic Support

• Assist students in building time management, goal setting, conflict resolution, and decision-making skills.

• Work with the Academic Support team to address learning difficulties that may be tied to emotional or psychological factors.

Record-Keeping and Compliance

• Maintain accurate, confidential case notes in line with ethical and institutional standards.

• Ensure compliance with university safeguarding policies, data protection, and professional ethical guidelines.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

• Master’s degree in Psychology, Counselling, Mental Health, or a related field.

• Minimum 1 year of experience in a counselling or student support role, preferably in a higher education setting.

• Strong interpersonal, active listening, and empathy skills.

• Knowledge of mental health challenges common among university students (e.g., anxiety, depression, burnout, identity).

• Fluency in English is required; Kazakh and/or Russian language proficiency is an advantage.
