Data Analyst Intern – Smart Water Metering

Project Context:

We, SUEZ International, are leading a city-wide digital transformation of Tashkent's water management system by deploying smart cold-water meters across the whole city. These smart devices use the Wireless M-Bus protocol, enabling remote consumption tracking, leak detection, and real-time alarms. This initiative is one of the largest IoT (Internet of Things) and Big Data projects in Central Asia, combining complex field operations with advanced analytics and IT system integration.
With daily meter installation operations across thousands of buildings, we collaborate closely with installer subcontractors for storage, testing, dispatch and installation of our devices. We also partner with the city's water provider to register customer and device data—such as GPS coordinates, billing information, and photographic evidence—into our smart metering information system to ensure accurate and timely billing.

Position Summary:
We are seeking a Part-Time Data Analyst Intern with strong analytical thinking and basic programming skills (or a clear willingness to learn). You will support the team in ensuring the quality, accuracy, and traceability of smart water metering operations — including installation and maintenance of smart water meters and gateways — and in improving the data integration and validation processes behind them.
This internship is a great fit for a final-year student or recent graduate who wants hands-on experience on a real IoT project and is motivated to build practical skills in data analysis and operations.

Responsibilities & Duties:

• Cartography & GIS Support: Maintain and improve geospatial datasets related to installations (district/mahalla, buildings/blocks, addresses), validate GPS coordinates, and help ensure accurate mapping of installed devices.
• Field Data Checks: Review installer-collected data (meter serial/ID, GPS points, photos, forms) to identify inconsistencies, missing fields, duplicates, or input errors before devices are registered in the IT system.
• Database Support (SQL): Assist with data extraction, validation, and troubleshooting tasks using SQL queries; support basic data loading and quality checks when needed.
• Dashboard Support (Power BI): Help update and maintain Power BI dashboards used to monitor inventory and installation progress; support data refresh validation and basic visual improvements.
• Gateway / Device Monitoring (support): Assist in analyzing and reporting technical issues from deployed gateways (e.g., log review, battery/temperature monitoring) and help prepare summaries for the team.
• Inventory Monitoring (support): Help track smart meter stock across the supply chain (storage, testing, dispatch, installation) and flag discrepancies or risks of loss.
• Automation (nice-to-have / if time allows): Contribute to small Python scripts that automate repetitive checks (GPS mismatches, duplicates, formatting issues, installation anomalies).
• KPI Reporting (if time allows): Support the definition and tracking of operational KPIs for installation and maintenance teams.
• Confidentiality & Compliance: Maintain strict confidentiality of company assets, data, and documents; follow internal data-handling rules.
• Additional tasks: Perform other related tasks within scope, as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

Required
• Strong interest in IoT / smart devices (e.g., gateways, smart meters) and operational data environments
• Python: basic to intermediate proficiency (data processing, simple automation scripts, validation checks) — or strong willingness to learn quickly
• SQL: basic to intermediate (filtering, joins, basic validation / error-checking queries)
• Power BI: basic to intermediate (building reports, KPI visuals, refreshing and maintaining dashboards)
• English proficiency (able to communicate and write short summaries)
• Russian and Uzbek proficiency (for coordination with local teams and documentation)

Nice-to-have
• Familiarity with field data collection, GPS data, or wireless communication concepts/protocols
Special Skills/Abilities Needed:
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, subcontractors, customers, and supervisors.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective working relationships across different levels of the organization.
• Nice-to-have: Basic knowledge of WM-Bus or similar IoT communication technologies (e.g., LoRaWAN, NB-IoT).

Experience specifications:
• Recent graduate (or final-year student) with a major in Data Analytics.

The company has signed a 7-year contract with Tashkent city municipality and the Ministry of Housing and Communal Services on March 7, 2020. Project started in August 01, 2023.

The total budget of the project is 185.4 million euros, of which 142 million euros will be disbursed through loans from leading European banks - the funds will be used to modernize urban water supply and sewerage networks and improve their management in accordance with the highest international standards.
